What is Maqui Berry?
The maqui berry is the fruit of Aristotelia Maqui (or Aristotelia chilensis) which is a Patagonian bush from Chile. The Aristotelia Maqui can grow up to 15 feet tall and 5 feet wide, its leaves are mostly green with yellow edges. It thrives in likes partial sunny exposures and can live in almost any temperate region.
Its fruit is fleshy and slightly acidic. The native Mapuches Indian have used for centuries for a variety of ailments. It can also be made into a very refreshing drink, or eaten raw straight from the tree. The leaves and bark of the maqui are very astringent; moreover, its bark contains a lot of Gallic acid that tends to darken the iron axes that are used to harvest it.
